US President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday a US ban on Russian energy imports, including oil and gas, stepping up a campaign of pressure on Moscow in response to its military operations in Ukraine.
“We will ban all imports of oil, gas, and energy,” Biden said at a White House press conference. “This means that Russian oil will no longer be accepted in US ports and the American people will deal another powerful blow to Putin.”
He added that imposing the ban came in close coordination with allies, noting that he would call on Congress to pass an aid package to Ukraine, and made clear that the United States would share the responsibility for taking care of refugees from Ukraine.
Biden indicated that the war in Ukraine is not an excuse for oil companies to make profits from the crisis, adding that the transition to clean energy will reduce energy costs.
